Rebecca Williams, one of the dog's owners, was throwing a surprise birthday party for her husband when a neighbor apparently filed a noise complaint.
The complaint led to the arrival of a Garland police officer to the address located on Torrance Drive.
Instead of approaching the front door to knock and ask that the music be turned down the officer went towards the back yard where he believed the noise was coming from.
“They could have come to the front door; they didn’t need to go to the back,” Jerry Williams told the
Dallas Morning News.
If the officer would have went to the front door the whole incident may have been avoided.
The officer claims that as he approached the back of the house the dog barked and then charged at him, prompting him to fire his weapon. He did not realize the dog was on a leash until after he shot and killed the animal.
This, of course, is not the first time that an officer has
killed the family pet. In fact, it might happen more often than you believe.
