Actor Jackie Chan to play Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid remake

By Chris V. Thangham     Jan 14, 2009 in Entertainment
Columbia Pictures is planning a remake of “The Karate Kid” and wants actor Jackie Chan to play the chief role of mentor Mr. Miyagi.
Columbia will shoot this remake later this year in Beijing and has signed Harold Zwart to direct the picture. They have also enlisted Jackie Chan to play the popular role of “Mr. Miyagi” made famous by the late Pat Morita.
Jaden Smith, son of actor Will Smith, will play the role of the student mentored by Mr. Miyagi.
In the original Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio was mentored by Morita. The remake follows a similar storyline, where Mr. Miyagi will guide Smith who is picked on by bullies. Miyagi will teach him martial arts to defend himself and the story will be based in China instead of in the U.S.
Will Smith will be one of the producers of the film.
Zwart directed movie hits such as "Agent Cody Banks” and Columbia’s upcoming movie “The Pink Panther 2,” another remake.
So what do you think: Will Jackie Chan be a good replacement for “Mr. Miyagi”?
