The world's largest drug company has 800 pink slips to deliver. That's the news today for many of the scientists that have helped build the drug company.
The company currently employees 10,000 people. It has pans to reduce its global research staff according to spokeswoman
Kristen Neese on Tuesday.
The headquarters for Pfizer's research are located in New London and Groton, Connecticut.
In September the company announced that it was going to limit its research scope to he company announced in September that it was narrowing its research focus to six disease areas — Alzheimer’s, cancer, schizophrenia, pain, inflammation and diabetes. The current layoffs are part of the new focus.
This new scope takes Lipitor out of the running. The drug is the top selling drug in the world. By 2011 though it is expected to face a tough generic market. Research to make a newer version of the medication has failed. In human testing, torecetrapib, the most promising drug in research was linked to heart problems.
Lipitor is already having a reduction in sales since the drug Zocor showed up on the market.
