It has been revealed by senior advisers that Guantanamo Bay will be closed down within days after Barack Obama officially takes office of United States President.
Back in December, there were talks about the inevitability of the military prison known as Guantanamo Bay or the Gitmo being shut down. There is also the concern on where the rest of the detainees will be shipped off to. Many European countries are lukewarm to the idea of taking in those prisoners. Albania heeded the United States’ request to take in some of the detainees.
Barack Obama said that he plans to close Gitmo down upon taking office of United States President. He takes office on January 20. According to senior advisers, Obama will issue an executive order in a few days after officially taking office. That would mean that one of the first things Obama will do is officially shut down the Gitmo. There is the question: Where will the 250 remaining inmates be shipped off to?
In an interview with ABC TV, Obama said it is going to be a challenging task. He said: “We’re going to get it done, but part of the challenge that you have is that you got a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom may be dangerous, who have not been put on trial or have not gone through some adjudication.”
With that, Obama has said that shutting down Guantanamo will be a challenging task. Again: Where will the rest of the detainees be shipped off to?
We can expect Obama to officially shut down the Gitmo when he officially takes office.
