Everybody these days is "into" twitter, from CNN newsrooms to the local writer in town. Students, teachers and everyday folk use it to send short messages. But there is trouble brewing at Twitter that is the talk of Twitterdom.
This is the gist of the story. CNET just announced it. Apparently some dastardly folk are using Twitter to perpetrate a scam on unwitting folk.
This is what happens. An individual receives a direct message that says it comes from Twitter. The invitation says to visit a site on blogspot.com. The message continues in an enticing way, asking the Twitter user to "hey! check out this funny blog about you." The Internet user is then forwarded to a page resembling Twitter but that really is a site that allows the theft of log-in IDs.
Twitter and company as well as those reporting what is happening recommend that if you want to log into Twitter, that you do so by going directly to the Twitter website. Then look at the browser to make sure that the Internet address is correct.
It has been found that Facebook IDs can be lifted from the bogus site, so there is a caution about that as well.
As a user I have also been told by a tech friend to add another caution that makes sense with social sites. That easy way of automatically remembering passwords and user names for websites may come up unexpectedly, so I don't use it at all, just in case it happens to come up in the wrong place.
These days it pays to be careful with social networking sites and communication spots, so according to Twitter and friends, users be careful of this new scam.
