Regardless on whether or not he is appointed, former Illinois AG Roland Burris will still attend the swearing-in ceremony.
On Election Day on November 4, it was Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama of Illinois that won against GOP nominee Senator John McCain of Arizona in a massive landslide victory. Obama would become President-Elect Obama. Afterwards, Obama would vacate his seat in the US Senate to prepare to transition his administration into the White House once current US President George W. Bush leaves office. That left Obama’s Senate seat vacant.
There was the question: Who will fill Obama’s seat?
Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested several weeks ago on charges of trying to sell Obama’s Senate seat and favors for money. There are plans for an impeachment trial against Blagojevich. However, Blagojevich plans to fight tooth and nail with everything he has.
However, he will have to pay the defense fees with his own dime. Illinois AG Lisa Madigan refused Blagojevich’s request to have the state pay for the legal fees. One would think that Obama’s Senate seat may not be filled for several months as a result of the scandal.
Yesterday, Blagojevich announced his appointment. He would appoint former Illinois AG Roland Burris to fill Obama’s seat. However, it has come under fire from the US Senate and Senate Democrats. But, it was not because of Burris. It is because Burris was appointed by the now embattled Blagojevich.
President-Elect Obama has called many times on Blagojevich to step down from office. However, Blagojevich has dismissed all calls to resign. Obama agrees with the decision not to seat Burris. But, he had plenty of good things to say about Burris. For that part, Burris is dragged in the middle because he was appointed by Blagojevich.
Regardless of the controversy, Burris will show up anyway. He will not make a scene if he is rejected.
That is not my style. I am not seeking to be confrontational,” Burris said. Many see Blagojevich’s actions to go ahead and fill Obama’s seat as in insult. It has received criticism from many.
Burris will still attend the swearing-in of US Senators. Will Burris be sworn in or downright rejected? We will have to wait until then to find out. The one thing that would look to hold Burris back would solely be the fact he was appointed by Blagojevich.
