Bangladesh gets Taste of Democracy for First time in Seven years

Proving a major part of election observers throughout the world wrong, the Bangladesh elected a democratic government for the first time in seven years.

In Bangladesh, a democratic government has been elected after a long span of eight years. As reported earlier, throwing away all the fears of right-wing muslim fundamentalist backlash, the people of Bangladesh had come out in large numbers and expressed their choice. While pointing out another significant development of the election procedure the observers noted that the nation after a long time experienced a violence-free election. In fact, given the present situation, most of the observers were of the view that undergoing such a violence-free election is something that deserves much praise. Importantly enough, other than the United Nations, the European Union as well sent their observers to monitor the election process. Former Prime Minster of the country Sheikh Hasina led Awami League emerged as the single largest party in the election by almost wiping out their main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Begum Khaleda Zia led Bangladesh Nationalist Party went into vote in an alliance while taking alongside some of the political parties that are known to be quite close to the muslim fundamentalists. However, the alliance received only 31 seats offering huge relieve to the entire region and to the rest of the world, per se. In one another noted development the observers pointed out to the fact of a huge turnout of young generation of the country. As the Bangladesh election commission pointed out that the number of voters around 21 years of age has played a major factor in this election. Now it is now completely up to Ms. Sheikh Hasina to fulfill the expectation that the voters showed to her. While speaking about expectation it should also be noted that not only the voters but the international community also will be interested to see the steps that Ms. Hasina applies in arresting the steady progression of right wing muslim fundamentalism. Interestingly, Ms. Sheikh Hasina herself is a victim of terror as her father Sheikh Mujibur Rehman was assassinated by unknown assailants soon after Bangladesh received her freedom in early seventies.
