Regardless of the situation in Zimbabwe, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is bent on staying in power with no regard for the state of the country, economy, or the people.
As the crisis in Zimbabwe continues to worsen, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe continues to be defiant. Mugabe has shown the world that he is bent on remaining in power regardless of the cost. So far, he has been accusing Britain of trying to regain control of the country. Mugabe had recently accused Britain for the recent break in cholera which has taken the lives of over a thousand people.
So far, it has been proven troublesome for South Africa. In regards to Britain, Mugabe said that it was responsible for cholera. His government said that
cholera is a biological weapon launched by Britain.
“
I will never, never sell my country. I will never, never, never surrender,” he said. Mugabe adds: “Zimbabwe is mine. I am a Zimbabwean, Zimbabwe for Zimbabweans. Zimbabwe never for the British. British for the British.” He said that Zimbabwe belongs to him.
So far, Mugabe has been getting political support from Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
In regards to the political situation, there has yet to be a power sharing agreement reached between Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai. Several months ago, Zimbabwe erupted into political violence as supporters of Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party hunted down supporters of the MDC. Tsvangirai withdrew from the runoff election out of fears of more violence.
In regards to the power-sharing agreement, the possibility is clinging for dear life. Current South African President Kgalema Motlanthe is positive that the parties will merge together. However, he is one of the few that seem optimistic about that idea. Many others are not that optimistic about that notion.
Tendai Biti, the chief negotiator for the MDC-T said: “
All this fiction (that a coalition government will be in place by this week). The parties are not even talking yet. These are people who expect an inclusive government under the current unfavorable conditions. Our resolution of the 8th national council in Kadoma is very clear that we will only participate in a unity government when all the issues raised have been met. As we speak, a number of our people are being abducted by state security agents. So really, it’s day-dreaming for him to expect anything before the end of this week.”
That implies that a power-sharing deal being reached anytime soon is highly unlikely.
Former South African President Thabo Mbeki was harshly criticized for his handling of the negotiations several months ago. Mbeki resigned from office several months ago back in September.
In regards to the power-sharing agreement, it can only make the situation in Zimbabwe even worse. To top that off, Mugabe continues to score negative points. While the people of Zimbabwe suffer, Mugabe is still living “fat and happy.” While the state of Zimbabwe continues to plunge further south, Mugabe decides to hold a
feast.
While the people of Zimbabwe are suffering, Mugabe and his cronies are chomping down on the following: 124 head of cattle, 81 head of goats, and 18 head of pigs. They would plow through all that quantity of meat.
Overall, it shows how much Mugabe truly cares about the country and Zimbabwe’s people. Asides from a cholera outbreak, there is the
anthrax outbreak to worry about. However, more coverage has gone towards the cholera outbreak. So far, the anthrax outbreak threatens to wipe out Zimbabwe’s cattle. To sum up everything, Mugabe is bent on remaining in “power.”
