Slipups in the Caylee Anthony Investigation Raise Questions

By Carol Forsloff     Dec 19, 2008 in Crime
The continuing drama over the disappearance and possible death of Caylee Anthony continued today when it was revealed that the utility worker who had reported the paper bag of remains had reported it in August.
The meter reader called detectives on three separate occasions, maintaining that he had seen something that concerned him and raised suspicions concerning the disappearance of Caylee Anthony that had been reported a month ago. But detectives, according to NBC Today, maintained that they saw nothing and that the area had already been searched.
This latest development indicates the difficulty the prosecution will face in the trial of Casey Anthony, accused of killing her daughter, Caylee, that is scheduled for January 2009. Jose Baez observed that this latest episode revealed the problems in the investigation that would lead to questions at trial.
Caylee Anthony disappeared in July. Originally there was a civilian and police search that took place over the area near the grandparents home and beyond. More than a week ago remains were found less than a mile where George and Cindy Anthony live, leading to speculation that the body is Caylee Anthony.
Those who recall the O.J. Simpson case, will remember the issues about the crime scene, when the death of Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were first reported, the footprints around the scene and other evidence. It is that type of evidence that Jose Baez, Casey Anthony's attorney, is focusing upon, according to his statements given to NBC on Friday morning. The evidence that is central to the case has prompted Baez to hire high-profile forensics experts, like Henry Lee.
The identification of the remains has yet to verify that the body recently found in Florida is that of Caylee Anthony, but authorities have speculated that it is. A book found at the scene appears to be the same one shown in pictures of the little girl and will likely also be part of the evidence used to help make identification and used at trial, if indeed the body found turns out to be that of Caylee.
