article imageObama Selected Time's Person of the Year

Time Magazine’s editor, Richard Stengel, has just made the long-awaited announcement of Barack Obama as Person of the Year.
Time selects a person they believe stands out from the rest of the people as having that certain quality that makes the person special. This year many people will believe that Time got it right. But there will be those who disagree. Let’s look at who Time selected as the other possibilities.
Stengel mentioned on the television program, the Today Show, that they considered several other people for Person of the Year. In order, from No. 5 to the first runner-up, they included: Zhang Yimou, the brains behind the Beijing Olympics, for putting together a fabulous show this year; Sarah Palin, for being a high profile “uniter” and “divider”; Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France; Henry Paulson; and finally Barack Obama.
Time’s Person of the Year, Barack Obama, was selected for the lauded position because, as Stengel said, he is a transformational figure and has already fulfilled some of his promises made during the Presidential campaign. Stengel said that Time considered giving the honor of Person of the Year to the American voter for having elected Obama. Stengel went on to say that other reasons the new President-elect was selected for the No. 1 spot to head the list of Persons of the Year was because Obama had focused on what he has to do and that, in fact, his first 100 days appeared to have started on Nov. 5, after the election.
Every year Americans talk about their favorite people. How many of them will agree that Obama is President of the Year and how many of them will cling to beliefs that Obama will be bad for the nation and see him as the controversial individual who doesn’t deserve the recognition?
So far, Obama has high approval ratings for this interim period before he takes office on Jan. 20, the date of the inauguration. Time has made its selection of Obama as Person of the Year. Would you?
