As the defense has already started to put together a list of their experts, beginning with high-profile expert Henry Lee, the prosecution’s people have continued over the past few days to work with a team of medical examiners and detectives gathering evidence in order to identify the body of the missing child they hypothesize might be Caylee Anthony. This initial phase of information gathering is critical to prosecution progress because any slip up in the preliminaries will mean a game won by the defense, with the possibly guilty to go free.
Caylee Anthony, age 3 now and only 2 at the time of her disappearance, has been gone for six months, while speculation has grown about her mother, Casey, who has allegedly changed her story about how the toddler came to have disappeared. Casey is in a Florida jail pending trial on murder and manslaughter charges scheduled for January.
Kevin Beary, Orange County Sheriff, is leading the team of investigators in putting together the evidence properly. Those who recall the high profile case of O.J. Simpson know what kinds of slip-ups can occur: too tight gloves that became the evidence used by Johnny Cochran to get Simpson declared not guilty, shoe prints that were examined by Henry Lee in the courtroom along with pictures that gave Lee public prominence, and blood splatters around the area where the crimes occurred. Beary's investigative team has been collecting evidence as well, not just the child’s remains, going into the Anthony grandparents home and getting more bags of items they believe could help solve the mystery of what happened to Caylee Anthony.
The Orange County Sheriff’s website has an Internet posting asking for anyone who knows the whereabouts of Caylee Anthony to make a phone call and provide the information. Already a number of forensic experts have been hired, according to the Orlando Sentinel, the newspaper tracking and reporting the case in Florida, states that an anthropologist, entomologist and botanist are all involved presently in looking at clues that have already been found. These clues will be sifted by experts for a number of weeks. The Sentinel writes that the FBI labors have already been sent pieces of the remains. Tests involved will included bone inspections, toxicology tests, DNA typing and trace-evidence analysis.
The fact that the remains have been said to be seriously decomposed, and have been there six months if they are identified as Caylee Anthony, means identification of the cause of death may be impossible according to key authorities. Caution and care by forensics is critical to proving the prosecution’s case as the O.J. Simpson case demonstrated and is likely been taken by experts in the instance of the case involving Casey Anthony and the disappearance, and likely death as authorities believe, of Caylee Anthony.
