article imagePre-chewed Pencils Improve School Children's Concentration

By M Dee Dubroff     Dec 12, 2008 in World
A British design company has launched a new product to help children concentrate in school. Well, the product isn’t new, but its condition is, namely, pre-chewed pencils! Enter a new realm of classroom decorum, but leave all distractions behind.
Concentrate is the name of the British company that has developed this new learning concept. They claim that because the pencils look like they have already been chewed, pupils are less likely to put them in their mouths. (I was a kid once. Nothing ever stopped me.) They further boast that this is an effective and very inexpensive way of encouraging children to “get their teeth” into their lessons instead of their pencils.
Concentrate specializes in school-related products with an emphasis on how to reduce class distractions, and they are convinced that this pencil with the chewed end encourages focused thinking.
The company’s boss, Mark Champkins, said:
“We know it's daft, but just get down to some concentrated thinking and who knows what might happen. We began to look at the reasons that children might be distracted, uncomfortable or unable to focus on lessons, and we set about designing some simple, cost-effective products to address some of the problems.”
Who can say about this? What about the chewed ends of notebooks and textbooks as added accessories to the pencil, not to mention a matching pen? Perhaps even a chewed up school bag in which the child can place the chewed pencil and books might even be in order?
Put on your thinking cap, look around the room and see what you can chew.
Make sure you can bite it off though.
Go figure.
