Chinese Farmer Builds Dozens of Robots From Scrap

By Chris V. Thangham     Dec 11, 2008 in Technology
A Chinese farmer has created an army of robots -- slightly more than four dozen of them, to be exact. He built the robots himself, with a little education and scrap materials.
Wu Yulu has loved designing robots since he was young. He gotinterested in robotics at the age of 11 while watching his fellow villagers walk by his home. He then came up with the idea of building a robot that walks like a man. He built a walking robot years later, as shown in the video and the photo on this page.
Yulu has designed these robots with hardly any technical education or any government help.
His robots can climb walls, serve water, light cigarettes, play musical instruments and write calligraphy.
Since Yulu doesn’t get funding from elsewhere, he has to take money from his monthly income from farming. In some cases he had to sell his robots to pay off bills.
He loves his robots so much and has named them in order of when they were built, ranging from Wu No.1 to Wu No.26.
