Planned Parenthood Holiday Gift:Health Vouchers

By M Dee Dubroff     Dec 11, 2008 in Lifestyle
In keeping with the giving spirit of the season and for those who are uninsured and cannot afford health care, Planned Parenthood of Indiana is offering holiday vouchers for basic health care. Read on for details, some merry, some no.
According to news reports, Indiana’s network of 35 clinics announced it is offering holiday vouchers for basic health care services “or the recipient's choice of birth control method.” Opponents of such procedures claim this gesture denigrates the holiday season..
According to Betty Cockrum, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Indiana:
“The organization decided to offer the vouchers because so many people are uninsured or are putting off health care because of prohibitive costs. Nearly 800,000 Indiana residents don't have health insurance.”
Planned Parenthood of Indiana operates abortion clinics in Indianapolis, Merrillville and Bloomington. Their annual exams for women, which include Pap tests and breast exams, typically cost $58. The vouchers can be used for the exams, but also for insurance co-pays and for medication.
Mike Fichter, president and CEO of Indiana Right to Life, had this to say:
“The tragedy is that almost 6,000 fewer children will be celebrating a first Christmas this year because they were aborted in Planned Parenthood's Indiana clinics.”
Planned Parenthood claims the vouchers are all about giving basic health care, and potentially lifesaving care. They can be applied to the cost of an abortion, should the woman make that decision.
A heated issue; an attempt to make a difference in the lives of the poor.
