Rain and thunderstorms have hit Dubai for the past few days causing flooding and creating severe traffic problems. Grand racing event at Dubai Autodrome was forced to be cancelled due to the circuit being submerged in water.
Rain and thunderstorms arrived in Dubai on Wednesday, 3 Dec 2008 and are expected to last over the weekend. It hardly ever rains, especially to this level. Heavy rain on Wednesday has caused traffic jams and water-logging in many areas.
Motorists are urged to take extra precautions driving in rain as roads are slippery and many areas are flooded. People planning to camp out over the coming Eid al Adha holidays are warned that flash flooding is possible for the rest of the week.
Rain in Dubai also left many areas in and around Dubai Autodrome flooded, forcing officials to cancel the final day of the two day Grand Racing event. Track Manager Richard Birch said, “This is some of the worst flooding I have encountered at the circuit. It is a shame...we were expecting a big crowd today."
According to 7DAYS, hundreds of passengers were left stranded outside Dubai International Airport after water burst through the ceiling in the departure area of Terminal Two. Passengers formed long lines outside, many expressing fears about flight delays.
Despite the inconvenience, residents are delighted with the rain and lowering of temperature after months of dry weather. Temperature is at 19-24 degree Celsius now, opposed to 27-32 degree Celsius before the rain.
