General Motors will lay off 2,000 more workers, 700 of which will be in Ontario; three factories will be affected in Oshawa, Ontario, and Lordstown, Ohio, and Orion, Michigan.
General Motors Corp. has announced that it is laying off another 2,000 workers, including 700 in Ontario
"It's all market driven, as all of our changes have been of late," a spokesman said.
Starting In February 2009, the company is cutting shifts at three factories, starting in February. The cuts include:
* The third shift of 700 workers in Oshawa, Ont., at the Chevrolet Impala plant.
* About 890 workers at Lordstown, Ohio, where the company builds the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5.
* The third shift, 390 workers, at the Orion, Mich., plant that builds the Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6.
These are indefinite layoffs as the company does not know when sales will pick up.
In November, GM's Canadian sales fell 23.5 per cent and plunged 41 per cent in the United States.
