This is about the chances of underdog boxer Manny Pacquiao of winning over the much superior boxer Oscar de la Hoya in a boxing match billed as "Dream Match" to be held at the MGM Grand on December 6, 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada
Boxing fans the world over know that the forthcoming boxing match between popular boxers Manny Pacquiao and Oscar de la Hoya is being staged because the promoters believe that it is the only boxing match that will make money at this time of economic slowdown. Many of these fans are angry at the promoters because Oscar de la Hoya is just too big for Pacquiao and they are saying that the fight is a complete mismatch.
In the Philippines, a government boxing regulator had called for the cancellation of the fight because of the obvious mismatch. Even the wife of Manny Pacquiao was initially opposed to the match but Manny prevailed upon her decision. A good number of sports writers in the Philippines and elsewhere in the world have expressed fear that Oscar will inflict so much damage on Pacquiao because of his physical superiority.
Fight statistics show that Oscar de la Hoya is way up in terms of reach, weight, height and built. Promotional photos of the two popular boxers standing side by side show their physical disparity. Oscar’s body built is just too big for a small guy like Manny. It is a classic case of David and Goliath.
Die hard boxing fans are expected to bet on Manny Pacquiao as the better boxer because of his speed and powerful punches. Others say that these positive Pacquiao trademarks will not work in a situation where his opponent possesses a far superior overall physical advantage.
Other than heavenly blessings for his god-fearing self, the only way for Pacquiao to win the fight is through a powerful lucky punch. Manny is very much known for his powerful left hand punch that sent Morales, Marquez, Barrera and Diaz to their knees. However, it is very hard to imagine how he gets near to de la Hoya for that lucky punch. First of all, he is shorter by 4 inches in reach and about 5 inches in height. Unless de la Hoya becomes disorganized and careless because of the sheer natural hand and foot speed of Pacquiao, he (de la Hoya) will have the fight in a silver platter.
There is a good possibility that Manny Pacquiao will win the match with a powerful lucky punch, but only a slim possibility and with a real hard and serious prayer.
