article imageWorkers and Shoppers Trampled at Wal-Mart

Black Friday has gotten of to an inauspicious beginning. At a Wal-Mart in Valley Stream , NY, an overnight stock clerk was trampled to death and a pregnant shopper was knocked to the ground during the 5 a.m bargain rush.
According to the New York Daily News, the unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m. Witnesses said he fell down amidst the rushing crowd and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.
The pregnant woman was knocked to the floor not far from the dying worker, a 34 year-old man. Jessica Keyes was among the shoppers and she told the Daily News, 'I saw a woman knocked down just a few feet from the dying worker. When the paramedics came, she said 'I'm pregnant." According to Keyes paramedics treated the woman inside the store and then, according to Keys, told the woman,"There's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."
Update, Nov. 29: News emerging today suggests the story about the miscarriage was false and eye-witness accounts were incorrect. More info here.
Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life. "They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through." Reportedly, only a few would be shoppers stopped. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. Three other shoppers suffered minor injuries.
This is a tragic scene that so far has not occurred at any other store nationwide as shoppers hustle for bargains on this aptly named day. Gladly this is an isolated incident, in which there was no security, only store employees doing crowd control, according to MSNBC.
Perhaps folks should opt for the chance to shop online for their bargains in an effort to preserve safety. I would imagine this idea of 5 a,m, breakneck, cut throat shopping, will have to be re evaluated in the future.
Perhaps, the Digital Journal article that Bob Ewing published a few days ago, will permeate a bit into America's consciousness and force these stores to push bargains earlier.
