Smokey is a two-year old cockatiel who lost his way. He was reunited with its owner after chirping its own name down the phone from the home of its rescuer. Read this tale so like that old commercial that told us all to “reach out to touch someone.”
According to news sources, the woman who found the two-year-old cockatiel wanted to be sure she was speaking to the rightful owners. What else could she do? She passed the phone to the bird who put everyone straight by immediately squawking his name into the phone. But let’s back up a bit.
Smokey was missing for two days after flying out of the door of his owner, David Edward’s home in Gwersylit, near Wrexham, England. His adventure in the wild ended when he found Sue Hill’s shoulder, which he immediately perched upon. She took him in and phoned the RSPCA who in turn put her in touch with Smokey’s owner who had reported his cockatiel missing. She said:
I called and spoke to his wife who told me her pet was called Smokey and asked me to put him on the phone. As soon as he heard her voice, he stopped chirping and began saying 'Smokey'. It was very funny. That was the first time the bird had spoken, and it was then I was sure that he belonged to them.”
Mr. Edwards was thrilled to have Smokey back. He said:
Smokey belongs to my 16-year-old grandson but lives here with us because we have two other birds.”
The morale of the story?
I couldn’t say for sure, but perhaps we can all learn from birds how to really…wing it?
Welcome home, Smokey. Please stay there!
