Op-Ed: Philippines' Press Secretary Dureza Politicking through Prayer

By Maria Narissa Aranzanso     Nov 20, 2008 in Politics
The Philippines' Press Secretary Jesus Dureza was believed to be politicking through an opening prayer he uttered on November 18. The prayer caused President Arroyo to cry out, "Oh my God!"
Philippine’s GMA News.TV reports “Dureza admitted that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo got terribly upset” on November 20, 2008.
Press Secretary Dureza, in a Cabinet Meeting held at the Aguinaldo State Dining Room in Malacañang, uttered an opening prayer, "Bless the President so we will have forbearance, good health, the tolerance to lead this nation up to 2010, and perhaps, who knows, even beyond.” The prayer embarrassed President Arroyo compelling her to cover her face with her hands accompanied with the expression, “Oh my God!”
Dureza claimed on Nov. 19 that the President was terribly upset about the prayer though he had claimed the day before that the President had taken it lightly.
The hint on the possible term extension on the prayer says it all. Being close to the President and known to be her supporter, Dureza was not able to hide his true feelings. Discussions have been circulating in the media that this might not be the Press Secretary’s personal wishes only but also the president and her allies’ truest intentions.
Talks about possibilities on Malacañang pursuing the Charter Change remain. Political analysts also figure out that President Gloria Arroyo and his supporters might be contemplating on Charter Change to escape lawsuits that would be filed against them pertaining to the North Rail, South Rail, ZTE, fertilizer and swine scams, to name a few.
However, Malacañang continues to deny allegations. But with the imminence of such dark motives, some media personalities doubt that such plans would flourish. They claim that the Filipino people have endured much and are just waiting for her term to end. Nonetheless, the media should not underestimate the lure of power and money.
