A navy warship from India was patrolling the waters near Somalia when a pirate boat attacked it. The Navy then retaliated and sank the boat.
Along with the U.S., UK and other countries, India is patrolling the area to protect ships that navigate through the Red Sea.
The INS Tabar navy ship from India was patrolling in the Gulf of Aden, just off the coast of Somalia, when a pirate boat approached it.
The Tabar saw the Somali boat approach them about 285 nautical miles (528 kilometers) south-west of Salalah in Oman on Tuesday evening.
The Tabar requested them to stop for investigation but the Somali boat threatened the Navy, saying they would shoot if Tabar approaches them. The boat fired some rounds at them, and the Indian Navy shot back. There was a huge explosion on the boat, which they think might have been due to ammunition the pirate boat was carrying.
The explosion sank the pirate boat and the pirates escaped the scene on speedboats.
So far, the Tabar has helped 35 boats from pirates, according to the Indian Navy.
This incident occurred just a day after the Sirius Star supertanker was seized by Somali pirates. The supertanker from Saudi Arabia is carrying more than two million barrels of oil (worth more than $100 million) and a crew of 25.
