After the attempted bombings of Glasgow airport by an NHS doctor amongst others and the failed car bombings in London, the doctor in question has told authorities now that he is, according to English law, a terrorist but not a murderer
After the attempted bombing of Glasgow airport using a Jeep filled with petrol and gas canisters, Bilal Abdulla, 29, has told authorities now that despite being a terrorist, he never wanted to hurt or kill anyone.
The two doctors to drove the Jeep into the entrance of Glasgow airport last year, Dr Abdulla, from Paisley, and Dr Mohammed Asha, 27, still admit to being terrorists yet deny any hatched conspiracies to murder and to cause explosions they had.
They said they didn't want to hurt anyone or kill anyone. They claim that all they wanted to do was merely "highlight the plight of people in Iraq and Afghanistan with a series of incendiary device attacks in June 2007. "
Recently in London at Woolwich Crown Court, the jury heard that Dr Abdulla had only told the Scottish police in not so many words that he was a terrorist, but hadn't actually said those words, at least, that's what he has claimed in court this week. It is also thought that he planned to return to Iraq, stopping off in Turkey on the way after the car bombings in London had failed completely. He also stated that when he arrived at the airport, his friend and driver, Ahmed, suddenly felt the urge to ram the Jeep as far as he could into the entrance of the terminal building.
Dr Bilal Abdulla told the court in his defence,
"Everyone was saying you are a terrorist, you are arrested under the Terrorism Act and so forth. That is my case in a nutshell. I am told I am a terrorist, but is your government not a terrorist, is your army not a terrorist? By the definition of the Act, according to English law, yes. That is my aim to change opinion using violence, using fire devices."
He then said of his friend, Kafeel Ahmed, 28,
"He drove through the barrier and I got alarmed and I shouted 'What are you doing, what is happening? I had never seen Kafeel's face like that in my life. He was determined, his foot was on the accelerator and he did not respond to me at all."
Yet Dr Abdulla did admit in court that as he jumped out of the crashed vehicle, he continued to throw petrol bombs into the entrance of the building as he ran away. He said of this, that he was only throwing the bombs away from himself in protection, and also accidentally lighting them as he was thrown them by his friend and the driver of the Jeep.
He then said of the events that shortly followed,
"(I) could not recall exactly what happened afterwards, I know that I had struggled with people, I received punches and I punched back."
The driver, Ahmed, who at the time was an Indian engineering student, died in hospital a month later after the attempted bombing of serious burns, since at the time of the crash, he had covered himself in petrol.
In court, Dr Abdulla said in response,
"From day one, we said we will not kill or injure any innocent person. This incident, if it was to kill people or cause an explosion, we would not have done it that way. It looks very clumsy."
The court case is expected to continue for some time...
