The radical anti-authoritarian gay group known as Bash Back have stormed a Lansing Michigan, Mount Hope Church during services.
The group Bash Back which is known for their anti-authoritarian beliefs and radical and sometimes militant actions are a network of radical, anti-authoritarian queer projects within the United States. The group was formed in Chicago Illinois in 2007. They came together with the purpose to facilitate a convergence of radical trans and queer activists from around the country and in time to protest at the DNC and RNC conventions.
The group has had new chapters pop up in Milwaukee, Memphis, Lansing, and upstate New York.
The Lansing group stormed the Mount Hope Church right before the 11:30 Sunday services. They were in front of the chruch picketing wearing pink bandannas, beating on buckets, and screaming through a megaphone " Jesus was a homo" and other slogans while the church goers were still entering the building. They paraded a pink wooden cross and rainbow Bash Back banners getting the attention of passers by and the normal church attendants.
Some of the Bash Back members who were dressed in normal attire for church carried Bibles and fliers to blend in to get inside of the church. Once inside they sprung to action by pulling the fire alarm , hanging a banner from the balcony and threw the fliers, while yelling at the congregation. Some began to make out in front of the pastor according to the groups own newsletter here.
"A group stood up, declared themselves fags, and began screaming loudly.
Upon hearing the loud interruption, other affinity groups went into
action. A team that had been hiding under the pews in the closed-off
balcony dropped a banner and pulled back the curtains to reveal “IT’S OKAY
TO BE GAY! BASH BACK!”. Another group threw over a thousand fliers to the
entirety of the congregation. The fire alarm was pulled. Queers began
making out in front of the pastor. And within a matter of minutes,
everyone had evaded the guards and made their escapes.
Bash Back! operatives, still hidden among the congregation observed a
person screaming that Satan had come to Mount Hope, that the end was here,
that the queers were everywhere. She then began speaking tongues. The
dumbfounded pastor, after regaining his composure, went on to speak of the
of decadent, depraved wolves that menace his flock of sheep.
Let it be known: So long as bigots kill us in the streets, this pack of
wolves will continue to BASH BACK! "
Approximately 40 minutes after the start of the services and after their own demonstration inside was complete they ran out of the church to their cars and got away before the Sheriff's deputies could get there.
When Eaton County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they questioned the remaining protesters in the church parking lot. Elieff who is the pastor and other church staff questioned the Bash Back members why Mt. Hope Church had been singled out.
The common response was "I don't know"."
Bash Back though has labeled the church as a well-known anti-queer, anti-choice radical right-wing establishment.
