Fred Thompson, former Senator from Tennessee and actor, is emerging as a top ranking contender for a run at the RNC chair.
The DC Examiner has reported that Fred Thompson is deciding to make a run for the RNC chairmanship. Thompson, who ran a very bland campaign for President during the Republican primaries, is still considered by many to be an inspiring voice of Conservative thought. Thompson does have some fierce competition from the likes of Newt Gingrich, Michael Steele, Chip Saltsman, and as well as many others.
However, bearing in mind the current state of affairs in the Republican Party the person elected to the chairmanship is of utmost importance. The RNC is responsible for the political policies of the Party as well as recruiting efforts for candidates and fund-raising, much of this work is done at a grass roots level. A person with Thompson’s ability to connect with people on this level might be viable for its future success.
The RNC chairperson will be facing a host of issues, but the main problem is going to be leading the Party back to its ideological roots. As the political battlefield is cleared of bodies, many strategists are finally figuring this fact out. The American voters were tired of the corruption, the spending, and obviously a very unpopular war. The RNC will have to start fielding candidates that represent their original Conservative values and distance themselves from the ideological flaws which led them astray.
Also, the Republicans haven't tackled issues such as health care and education. These were long thought to be owned by the Democrats, however, they must move to the top of the list among the RNC’s revised platform. The Republicans have been off message and taking on topics such as these will help them reconnect with the voters and their concerns.
Whatever road Conservatives decide to take it will be a difficult one. Recovering from the massacre of the 2008 election will take some time, but they need to get started right away. Their very first problem to overcome will be establishing sound leadership with a recognizable face. Candidates like Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich might fit that bill, the only question that remains is how creative can they be?
