article imageSarah Palin: Why Are Reporters Wasting Time On Her And Not Focusing On History?

By Nikki Weingartner     Nov 8, 2008 in Politics
Sarah Palin responded to the inflammatory allegations from 'anonymous' sources on Friday, calling them false. But the main point was that a historical moment was in the making and that reporters were focusing on little puffy clouds about accessories.
In an Associated Press report, Sarah Palin was quoted as saying:
"This is Barack Obama's time right now, and this is an historic moment in our nation and this can be a shining moment for America and our history, and look what we're talking about. Again, we're talking about my shoes and belts and skirts. It's ridiculous."
And why?
After constantly dodging rogue arrows targeting her alleged extravagant shopping spree and her supposed ignorance, the Governor of Alaska responded by stating that the claims were false. Another rumor with no credence that lawyers were coming to her home to take back the clothing? "Not true," Sarah said in her first public response to the allegations made by anonymous sources from inside the McCain campaign.
Palin called the claims "cowardly," and as the report stated, she appeared somewhat frustrated at having to attempt to defend herself against allegations from ghost sources that she said were false.
With regards to the clothing issue, Sarah Palin said:
"The RNC purchased clothes.
Those are the RNC's clothes. They're not my clothes. I never forced anybody to buy anything. I never asked for anything more than maybe a Diet Dr Pepper once in a while. Nobody's told me that they're coming to my house to look through closets, to look through anything. The belly of the plane that had clothes in it, and those clothes being packed up and sent back by staffers, perhaps that's what they're talking about, but these aren't attorneys."
A more serious question on the table is the one of lying. Who made the claim that lawyers were coming to retrieve the clothing?
And on the issue of Africa? Well, Palin went as far to call the actions of taking it out of context "immature" and "mean-spirited." She even went as far as to add in they were "jerks."
Are ultra slanted media hounds known for their twists and isolated sound bytes that either sensationalize or demoralize those they interview, regardless of the political viewpoint? To use one of the most irritating phrases in the English language: Absolutely!
Have good reporters in the past gone astray by creating false sources or failing to check the credibility of their source? Sure.
Although her inexperience does seem to peek through frequently, having the ability to defend the allegations is part of our democracy. As she said in her interview, she just wants to get back to her desk and work on the pipeline and that the current time is Obama's and it is historical. So focusing on shoes an skirts? Just a waste of time.
On a side note, I wonder if Chris Crocker will get ahold of this feeding frenzy or has he really given it up for good?
