By KJ Mullins     Nov 7, 2008 in World
A school that normally holds 500 students collapsed today in Haiti. At this time the death toll is at50 people with many more injured. Using their bare hands rescuers are digging out survivors.
It is believed beneath the rubble many more children are buried. The death toll is expected to climb as the survivors and the bodies of victims continue to be removed from the rubble.
Eight years ago the building collapsed. Those that live close by believe that the structure was rebuilt poorly. Those living just below the structure moved in fear that some day the building would tumble over.
The church-run school educates students from kindergarten through high school. It is being speculated that the minister that runs the school could be facing charges.
CNN reports that the school was filled and that it was a typical day when the building crumbled.
President Rene Preval and Prime Minister Michele Pierre-Louis toured the disaster area.
"I heard and saw with my own eyes children appealing for help," Preval was quoted as saying on the French language
"We are taking all necessary steps," Pierre-Louis said. " The government has mobilized to save those who can be saved."
