Both the United States and the world awhole have waited anxiously for the conclusion of the 2008 presidential election. For countless days and hours we have all waited and it is finally over - Ladies and Gentlemen, we ought to celebrate.
It has been a long while since the world has had good reason to rejoice in unison. In the last decade there have been earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, wars, financial catastrophes, and of course terrorist attacks.
The past two elections in the world’s most influential nation have seemed like a mirage - uncertain, phoney. On a global level, it has felt as though the only positive uniting forces bringing everyone together have been the Olympics and the World Cup; inadequate as they may be.
But today, November 5, 2008, the world wakes up with new President elect of the United States of America – a man overwhelmingly supported in the popular vote – Barack Obama. A man who represents change, responsibility, commitment, and above all else, hope – hope that is intended to enliven and revivify his own nation, as well as spread and take root in the people of nations that are in similar need of change, responsibility, commitment, and above all else hope.
In his victory speech, which began at or around 12:00 am Wednesday morning, Obama spoke briefly, but profoundly and sincerely, directing his thanks to the many (many) people who voted for him. After delivering a few of his regular talking points, Obama conveyed a message to the many people of the world, both citizens and statesmen, reiterating that his presidency will be one that pursues unity and ends beyond capital gain.
Obama spoke frankly to Americans, urging them to work collectively, arguing that in order for America to succeed, every American had to succeed. Obama said that Americans are capable of working together, intensely and efficiently, and that – measured calloused hand by calloused hand – America can brighten its future and continue to carry on its legacy as the most influential nation on the planet.
Promising to be a leader for all, promising to listen to all – especially those he disagrees with – the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States of America is something the entire world can collectively enjoy and celebrate.
Though John McCain is not a bad man, the inspirational, motivational, and universal impact of Barack Obama’s success has created something that McCain would never have commanded even if elected commander-in-chief.
In order to be inspired by Obama we need not look past his policies, programs, and attitude - yet it cannot be ignored that the election of an African American to the highest position in the country represents something that I am not capable of sufficiently describing; it is good though.
As it is, in any event, wherever you are, today – November 5, 2008 – is a day on which you can justly wear a smile. Hope is restored; Barack Obama has been elected President of the United States of the America.
Thanks for reading.
