Runaway Hamster Alive and Well In England

By M Dee Dubroff     Nov 4, 2008 in Lifestyle
Against all odds, a runaway hamster has been found alive after evading a team of eight firemen armed with a chocolate-coated camera. Read all about Fudgie’s nine-day misadventure that ended well for both the hamster and those who love him.
According to news sources, Fudgie's nine-day ordeal beneath the floorboards of the Appleby home in Dunbar, East Lothian, finally came to an end when he was trapped inside a baited cage by firemen who coaxed him out with the tasty mini-camera and a vacuum cleaner with a sock over the nozzle. Finding the creature was the first part of the problem and the firemen took the kitchen cooker and gas pipes apart in an effort to locate poor little Fudgie.
The firemen’s original efforts failed and they needed help and advice, which they got from the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They suggested cutting off the hamster’s food supply and laying down the baited cage. For the little girl, Zoey, who was watching Fudgie for a friend, the ordeal was terrible, for she felt responsible for the hamster’s escape. Her mother, Angela, told the press:
"The plan worked and hunger eventually brought Fudgie out. It was like Christmas morning at our house. Zoe sat in her pajamas in front of Fudgie's cage and just watched him for hours.”
It is not known exactly how Fudgie feels about all this, but one can only surmise that for this lucky, beloved little creature all really is well that ends well.
Welcome home, Fudgie. (Stay there now, will you?)
