Syria's foreign minister has condemned the US for a helicopter attack on its soil. He branded the raid as a "criminal and terrorist aggression."
Walid Muallem said the attacks involved 4 US aircraft flying 8 miles into Syria from Iraq. He also reported that 8 unarmed civilians were killed.
US military officials have anonymously said that a high profile Al-Qaeda operative was the target, and that he has been eliminated.
A US official told AFP that the raid killed "one of the most prominent foreign fighter facilitators in the region".
The White House neither confirmed nor denied the allegations.
Muallem, speaking at a news conference in London, said Sunday's raid on the town of Abu Kamal killed a fisherman, a couple, a man and his three children.
"We consider this criminal and terrorist aggression. We put the responsibility on the American government," he said.
Muallem warned that the Syrian government will "defend [their] territories" if another similar incident occurred.
