"Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut; it's just another government giveaway that would merely shuffle wealth rather than creating it," McCain said yesterday. He then compared Obama unfavorably to EU Socialists.
Yahoo News, via Drudge, reports Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Saturday accused Barack Obama of favoring a socialistic economic approach by supporting tax cuts and tax credits. McCain claims such a policy would just redistribute wealth rather than creating it.
"At least in Europe, the Socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives," McCain said in a radio address. "They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Sen. Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut; it's just another government giveaway."
The article also goes on to say McCain plans to travel Sunday to Ohio for a possible meet with Joe the Plumber, who has been the nexus of the Obama 'spread the wealth around' controversy.
The video on that fateful encounter has spread farther and wider than any wealth Obama might hope to tax and redistribute, and the GOP has been hammering him relentlessly on it.
One thing is for certain, given Americans' anti-tax history: Americans do not like to be told they must pay higher taxes 'for the greater good' or any reason for that matter. Similar claims helped sink Michael Dukakis in his race against George Bush I in 1988.
How this will all play out on Election Day remains to be seen, but there has been a great deal of coverage and attention on Joe The Plumber and Obama's controversial statement to him, none of it good for the Obama campaign.
