One of the biggest disadvantages of RFID tags thus far is the need to run them off batteries. Now, solution has been developed.
GE Global Research has reportedly built a battery-free RFID sensing platform, vastly increasing the usability and power efficiency of the technology.
The RFID tags are passively activated and powered by the sensor platform. This means that data is transmitted through the tags only when it is required.
The technology always been touted as a major revolution for years, but it has thus far not lived up to its potential.
RFID or Radio Frequency Identification tags are objects, usually chips that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for identification and tracking using radio waves - Wikipedia.
Major uses of RFID include healthcare, food packaging, and for other identification purposes.
