The practice of handwashing with soap tops the international hygiene agenda this year with the first-ever Global Handwashing Day.
How many times have you washed your hands today? Today is the first ever Global Handwashing Day so take a minute and ask yourself, how often have you washed your hands today?

Washing your hands with soap and water is still the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea and acute respiratory infections. These infections take the lives of millions of children in developing countries every year.

When taken together, these infections are responsible for the majority of all child deaths. Yet, despite its lifesaving potential, handwashing with soap is seldom practiced and difficult to promote.

This is the underlying reason for organizing Global Handwashing Day to promote a basic hygienic activity that of washing your hands with soap and water.

Of course the ability to do this depends upon the availability of soap and clean water.
