The Number 2 leader of al-Qaida in Iraq has been killed by American troops during a raid in Mosul the U.S. military announced Wednesday.
Abu Qaswarah was trained in Afghanistan. He was able to rally al-Qaida followers in Iraq despite security measures of both the Iraqi and United States security forces.
On October 5 during a battle in Mosul five insurgents were killed, one of those Abu Qaswarah, has been positively identified.
Military reports say that Abu Qaswarah directed the smuggling of foreign terrorists into northern Iraq.
There are no further details on the death of the insurgents at this time.
In other Iraqi news; the U.S. military is saying that they suspect Iranian agents are trying to bribe Iraqi politicians to oppose a pact that would extend the presence of American troops in Iraq. Rear Adm. Patrick Driscoll says that it is not thought that any of the politicians have taken such a bribe.

"There are indicators that Iranian agents may come across the border and use money or other bribes to influence Iraqi politicians," Driscoll said. "It's a whole different matter whether Iraqi politicians would accept that."
