Members of the House of Lords received unexpected angry visitors and surprised police as anti airport protesters stormed their way through security and entered the Parliament building. The riot was caused by recent clashes over an airport expansion
Thousands of angry protesters demonstrated outside the Houses of Parliament earlier on this evening BST as members of the House of Lords on the other side of the security gates debated over the recent subject of expansion of the south eastern airport of Stanstead.
The protesters saw a way of getting into the building in Westminster a couple of hours ago through the main public entrance into the parliamentary buildings via St Stephens Gate. Police wrestled with the surprise visit and managed to close the security gate making surprisingly one arrest. The arrest was made on a 23 year old woman.
The demonstrators were also making their feelings known over the possible expansion of London's major airport, Heathrow.
The government have given the green light for the works to start over at Stanstead as early as this month and the expansion on Heathrow to start after a decision is to made on the already massive airport later this year. Police had to barricade the gate with two large metal bars.
Speaking on behalf of the police present at the Houses, Inspector Tim Barfoot, said,
"The situation is being dealt with. We are concerned to ensure the effective running of Parliament."
The
Houses of Parliament have seen it's fair share of security breaches so far this year. The last outburst saw demonstrators climb up on to the roof of one of the government buildings showing banners.
