Burger King has officially announced plans to open up the scaled down and trendier version of their fast food joints that will be found in highly traveled but space crunched areas. The "Whopper Bar" is scheduled to open in Spring of 2009 in Florida.
In February of 2009, Burger King has plans to open up a new type of fast food restaurant across the globe with Universal CityWalk in Orlando, FL being the first location on the list, a press release on October 7 revealed. The Wall Street Journal(subscription required for full story) reported the innovative move as one that Russ Klein, Burger King's president of global marketing, strategy and innovation, plans to come to fruition over the next year and a half.

According to a Reuters article:

The company, which first unveiled the concept in March, is in negotiations for 20 to 25 Whopper Bar sites around the world, including Europe, Latin America and Asia, Russ Klein, president of global marketing, strategy and innovation, told the Journal.

So what can we expect from the new and trendy "Whopper Bar?"

Higher prices, fewer items and possibly some beer???

The scaled-down version of Burger King is designed to bring in the BK fans in areas where other chains operate a skeleton restaurant such as airports or train stations. Even the blogosphere reports details about the new bar's menu having:

"as many as ten types of Whoppers such as the Western Whopper, the Texas Double Whopper and the Angry Whopper, a version topped with spicy onions. One menu sketch has a section called "Pimp Your Whopper," where patrons can chose from additional toppings like jalapeno peppers, bacon and barbecue sauce."

Places like Starbucks, which operate 15 mini-coffee houses at Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) Airport in Texas provide the continuity of service and products to loyal customers who are on the go. McDonald's, which opened up its airport locations back in the mid-eighties, really set the trend as far as the mini-fast food stop in highly traveled areas.

So as the company continues to chant the slogan "Have it your way", you can bet that they too will cash in on the business opportunity that others have been using now for some decades.

So if you are in the mood for an "Angry Whopper" and happen to be in Orlando next spring......well, enjoy.
