2008 has been a brutal year so far when it comes to natural disasters. In just the first 6 months over 230,000 people have lost their lives world-wide to Mother Nature's fury.
Most of those who have been killed by the
elements were located in China and Burma.
The earthquake that hit in May 2008 in China claimed the lives of 87,500. Many of the dead were school children who were buried in their educational buildings as the earth shook below them.
The disaster in Burma was even worse with 138,000 dead after Cyclone Nargis hit the poor country.
The flooding in India and the hurricanes that devastated the Caribbean have also added to the world's death toll.
Those that survive have had to face homelessness, disease and hunger. It is estimated that 130 million people are having to rebuild their lives after a natural disaster happened this year.
