Environmental groups are criticizing Starbucks for allowing water taps to run in its stores all day. Starbucks claim they do this to maintain hygiene conditions in their stores.
Water UK, an environmental agency group, told the Press Association (PA) news agency that Starbucks is wasting too much water in their stores. Barrie Clarke told PA: "We think that it sounds like a serious waste of water and an unnecessary waste of water because we are at a loss to know what that purpose of it is. There must be other ways of ensuring hygiene in a coffee shop other than allowing a tap to run all day long."

Water UK claims that Starbucks wastes million of liters of water by letting its tap run all day.

Starbucks, however, disputes this claim and says that it does this only to ensure proper hygiene and clean utensils in their stores.

A Starbucks spokeswoman claims that they use a “dipper well” to keep their utensils clean and their taps run at very low pressure.

She told PA:
Dipper wells use a stream of continuous cold fresh-running water to rinse away food residue, help keep utensils clean and prevent bacterial growth.

These dipper wells are meant to meet the local and Starbuck’s health standards requirements.

The environmental groups are recommending Starbucks to use more water-efficient cleaning methods such as dishwashers.

The Starbucks spokeswoman said they will be switching to dishwashers from dipper wells in the near future, but they wouldn’t give a timetable.

For a large number of dishes, use of dishwashers is the most efficient cleaning method and helps water conservation by using an optimum amount of water.
