Why did the leaders of this small town in the Ukraine use their tax dollars to erect a 50-thousand-pound statue of a frog to mark their town's 299th anniversary? Read on even though the answer remains as clear as…mud.
This odd concrete statue may well be an example of how “keeping up with the Jones” can sometimes go ridiculously awry. According to
news sources, the town of Golaya Pristan erected the statue after a neighboring village constructed a smaller frog statue in bronze, which was criticized as being “ a bit too flashy” by local residents. A spokesman for city authorities said:
“The one in Golaya Pristan belongs to ordinary people and therefore is made of concrete.”
Many of the town’s “ordinary people” however, have written to local authorities demanding to know why they put up a statue honoring a frog and local radio stations have begun debates on the giant monument.
One local woman, Natalia Slivka, had this to say:
"What on earth has a frog got to do with our town? And why have they put up a massive statue using taxpayers' money to mark the town's 299th anniversary? God knows what they will unveil next year for the 300th anniversary - a one-ton statue of a lizard or something. Someone at the city council must have been drunk or mad when they dreamt up this idea.”
And perhaps that is the answer my friends, for in too much vodka therein lie not only truth but also…stupidity.
Go figure.
