In a weird twist of fate, a truck transporting 5,000 condoms, 800 HIV tests and a 23-foot-inflatable prophylatic has disappeared from the streets of Mexico City. Read on and….wonder.
According to Polo Gomez, the coordinator of an HIV/AIDS Awareness Tour, the “CondoMovil” which has toured Mexico since 1998, promoting safe sex practices while distributing 1.2 million condoms to more than 700,000 people, had been parked in front of a friend’s house when it disappeared last week. News reports indicate that police are investigating the matter, but no one can figure out why anyone would want to steal the truck.

It’s like stealing a red elephant. The truck is hard to miss with its painted images of a peeled banana, the exposed part of the fruit shaped like a condom and a shirtless man saying: ‘I protect myself. Do you?’ In addition, the large inflatable condom, which was used to draw attention from passers-by, is not something that can be easily (if at all) disguised!

According to the United Nations AIDS program, there are some 200,000 people living with HIV in Mexico. The truck was purchased with a grant from Mexico's Federal Health Department, who also generously donated the 5,000 condoms.

Although this may well be a prank, it really isn’t funny. Still, one can only wonder, how can anyone hide a truck so large?

Will the word condo (which is almost there) take on a new meaning in light of this theft, perhaps to signify a roofed structure to house them?

What is this world coming to anyway?

Wait, what’s that I see. Oh, false alarm. It’s just a red elephant and his trainer crossing the street!
