For $200 and the cost of two textbooks students at Oaksterdam University can get a high education. The school prepares its students for the world of medical marijuana.
Not every school has teaching assistants setting up the lab with marijuana plants but at Oaksterdam University it's just another day of learning. The school teaches students what are the best strains of the plant for certain ailments and how to cook up the leaves for tasty medical treats.
The only prerequisite for the program is a Politics/Legal Issues 101 class. Richard Lee, a marijuana activist, started the school last year in a downtown Oakland storefront.
Lee is quoted by MSNBC:
"At Oaksterdam University, we strive to provide the highest quality training in all aspects of the cannabis industry, so that you will be prepared to find employment in one of the hundreds of cannabis dispensaries in California or start one of your own," Lee tells students in a letter attached to the application form.
The two-day weekend course has had 60 students complete the take-home test. Over 600 students have attended Oaksterdam and are using that knowledge in the Oakland area.
The course includes two law lectures, a history lecture and Horticulture 101. The plant lab has Lee teaching his pupils who to use plant food and upgraded electrical outlets, a fan and an air filters to grow the herb.
Some of the students are medical patients that want to grow their own medicine. Some just like the knowledge of the best way to grow their favorite weed. Still others plan to go into the medical marijuana business.
Being able to grow medical marijuana can earn a decent paycheck. While entry-level workers tend to make little more than minimum wage those labeled "bud tenders" can make more than $50,000 a year. Owners of medical marijuana business can earn over $100,00.
If you think you have talent for this type of business the school has a
website.
