A 33-year-old man died after eating a super spicy chili sauce that he prepared in a competition with his girlfriend’s brother according to an English inquest.
A man named Andrew Lee made a friendly wager with his girlfriend’s brother. Lee challenged him to see who could make and eat the hottest sauce.
Lee, a forklift driver, made a tomato sauce with red chilli peppers grown by his father. Lee apparently added too many, however, as he suffered intense discomfort and itching after eating the sauce.
Lee didn’t go to the hospital, either. He stayed in bed as his girlfriend, Samantha Bailey, scratched his back until he fell asleep. When she tried to wake him up the next morning, he was dead. The paramedics were called in to help, but they were unable to revive him. They believe he suffered a heart attack.
Lee was apparently in good health, and recently passed a medical examination at work.
Lee’s sister, Claire Chadbourne, 29, told
The Guardian that he took a jar of the sauce to his girlfriend’s home and challenged her brother Michael to see who could eat it.
Claire told The Guardian:
"Andrew just ate the chilies with a plate of Dolmio sauce. It was not a proper meal because he had already eaten lamb chops and potato mash after work...He apparently got into bed at 2.30am and started scratching all over. His girlfriend ... woke up and he had gone. It is incredible. Who would have thought he could have died from eating chili sauce?"
Claire added that Lee always wanted to become a chef.
The inquest is ongoing and toxicology tests will be conducted to see if Lee suffered a reaction to the food.
