The leader of the Green Party of Canada ,Elizabeth May
believesCanada must play a greater and more honest role in global nuclear disarmament.
In Edmonton, May was joined at the Podium by the Honourable Douglas Roche, former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations Disarmament Committee. She was speaking at a rally outside the Edmonton Railway station as part of a cross Canada whistle stop train tour.
"The Green Party is committed to raising issues other parties ignore. The risk of a revived nuclear arms race may not dominate the headlines, but unless serious and meaningful engagement to eliminate nuclear weapons is undertaken soon, we could sleep walk into a nuclear nightmare." Ms May said.
May said Canada has been giving lip service to nuclear disarmament and ignoring violations of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by the United States.
"The Harper government has weakened efforts for nuclear disarmament by undermining the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. This issue is one of many on which voters need to be fully informed." Ms May said.
May pointed out that Canada continues to push foreign sales of the CANDU reactor, even though Canadian technology was used by both India and Pakistan to develop nuclear weapons.
The
train tour continues Truro, NS with stops along the route.
