Another massive diamond has been found earlier this month in an enclave of South Africa, weighing in at around 500 carats. Experts believe that this massive beauty might produce one of the largest flawless D color round polished diamonds in history.
A diamond that may be one of the world's largest weighing nearly 500 carats,
was found earlier this month in the Letseng mine located in the southern African kingdom of Lesotho. According to experts who analyzed the gem and Gem Diamonds, the mining company responsible for the find:
"It has the potential to yield one of the largest flawless D color round polished diamonds in history"
The new find has the makings for producing a 150 carat gem, which would indeed tower the
Koh-i-Noor diamond.
Four of the world's largest diamonds have been found in Letseng, three of which have been found this century. In 2006,
The Lesotho Promise, weighing in at just over 600 carats contributed to the mine's success as the largest find of the century. It sold at auction for $12.4 Million US. Twenty-six stones were cut from the
Promise diamond.
The first place record holder for largest is still the Cullinan diamond which was found in South Africa in 1905. It weighed over 3,000 carats. Two giant polished stones from the Cullinan sit in the Tower of London as part of the Crown Jewels.
