Green Party leader Elizabeth May is kicking off her cross-country whistle stop train trip with a rally in Vancouver on Sunday, September 21st.
Shades of days gone by and a return to what united Canada, Federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May
kicks off her cross-country whistle stop train trip with a rally in Vancouver today. The Green Party has rented a train car from VIA Rail for the tour and has launched a
new website where Canadians can track the Green Train’s progress and learn about whistle-stop rallies planned for their communities when the train rolls through.
“The Green Party wants to put Canada back on the right track,” said Ms. May. “We are prepared to walk the walk, and that’s why I’m campaigning by train during this election instead of crisscrossing the country with a private airplane. Not only will our train trip produce a mere fraction of the emissions of a plane, but taking the train will allow me to highlight the importance of rail infrastructure.
“Canada urgently needs an overhaul of our passenger and freight rail systems,” said May. “The Green Party is committed to making this happen and we will re-invest in our national rail system. We will build more train cars in Canada, improve rail infrastructure and connections and restore service to regions that have been cut off from rail.”
The Green Train leaves Vancouver on Sunday afternoon and will arrive in Toronto on Wednesday night. The second part of the tour will begin on Friday, September 25th, with a trip from Toronto to Montreal in the day and an evening departure from Montreal en route to Atlantic Canada.
The Green Train will arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, September 27th. May will then return to her nearby riding of Central Nova.
Green Party supporters across the country have planned whistle-stop rallies in their communities when the Green Train passes through. The Vancouver rally will begin at 4:00 PM and will conclude when the train leaves at 5:30 PM.
