The cover of the latest issue of Gospel Today features five female pastors. Those pretty ladies have gotten the magazine put under the counter and out of view at Lifeway Christian bookstores.
The bookstores owners are Southern Baptist Convention and they have a problem with those smiling ladies. The belief of the sect is that only men are good enough to preach the gospel from the pulpit.
The Atlanta Journal quotes
Teresa Hairston, owner of
Gospel Living:
It’s really kind of sad when you have people like [Gov.] Sarah Palin and [Sen.] Hillary Clinton providing encouragement and being role models for women around the world that we have such a divergent opinion about women who are able to be leaders in the church,” Hairston said. “I was pretty shocked.”
Lifeway Resource spokesman Chris Turner said, “It is contrary to what we believe.”
The magazine does not turn up on their website when searched. Instead books of the gospel are offered to site guests.
Female pastors are in a new age of preaching in the United States. Southern Baptist churches by and large have not embraced a lady leading a congregation but there are exceptions. Decatur First Baptist is headed by Rev. Julie Pennington-Russell.
Catholics also do not allow for women to head their churches. Some conservative evangelical groups, such as the Presbyterian Church in America, still are old school when it comes to women preachers, they aren't able to preach to the flocks either.
