article imageSaturday Night Live debuts with Fey as Palin, Phelps as host

The new season of Saturday Night Live (SNL) began this weekend with actress Tina Fey playing Gov. Sarah Palin and Michael Phelps as the host.
Tina Fey was a popular SNL actress who recently left the program for her own show on NBC. She returned briefly yesterday for the premiere of the show’s new season, where she stole the limelight from eight-time Olympic gold medalist, Michael Phelps, by impersonating Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Fey resembles Palin, and adding make-up and a Palin-like hairstyle made Fey look even more like the John McCain running mate. She even sounded like Palin.
Fey and Amy Poehler, who imitated Hillary Clinton, appeared together and opened the show with a non-partisan message to address the issue of sexism in the campaign.
The SNL cast took digs at them both.
Poehler (as Clinton) said at one point: "I didn't want a woman to be president, I wanted to be president," as she displayed her disappointment about not running as a front runner. And she shows jealousy toward Palin by complaining about her quick rise and wearing “Tina Fey glasses.”
She also said she has more experience than Palin. As Poehler bragged about her foreign policy experience, Fey (as Palin) said, "I can see Russia from my house!"
Poehler discussed the Bush Doctrine and how she disagrees with it. Fey (as Palin) acknowledged it by saying "I don't know what that means," referring to her discussion about the subject with Charlie Gibson of ABC earlier this week.
Poehler ended the sketch with the following: "In conclusion, I invite the media to grow a pair. And if you can't, I will lend you mine."
Michael Phelps did a decent job after showing some initial nervousness. After the show he said, "This seriously is like the ninth best moment of my life."
