Slacker Uprising Trailer
Michael Moore, director of Fahrenheit 9/11, Sicko, and Roger & Me, will release his next movie Slacker Uprising online and for free in high definition. It will be the first major film released on the Web free.
Moore released Fahrenheit 9/11, a movie highly criticizing the U.S. President George W. Bush, just before the elections in 2004. He plans to release another election year movie similarly with Slacker Uprising this election year.

Moore said he is doing this to thank his fans for supporting him through his 20 years since his first film Roger & Me in 1989. Moore told AP:
I thought it'd be a nice way to celebrate my 20th year of doing this...And also help get out the vote for November. I've been thinking about what I want to do to help with the election this year.

The film, Slacker Uprising, follows Moore’s 62-city tour to rally young voters to vote for the 2004 election. After the city tour, Moore convinced many young voters to register and vote for the elections. More than 20 million 18 to 29-year-olds cast ballots in 2004 (an 11 per cent increase from 2000). Moore is hoping even more “slackers” will vote this year.

Just like how the music group Radiohead gave away one of their music albums, In Rainbows, for free, Moore will be giving away his movie online free beginning September 23. Neil Young also released his anti-war album “Living With War” for free before it was officially released.

The movie is about 97 minutes long and will be the first major film to be released only in online for free.

Other studdios have distributed shorter versions of the movie online such as Jackass 2.5 (for free) and ClickStar’s 10 Items or Less (for purchase or rental).

If Moore released this movie in theaters, film experts believe he can make a reasonable profit. His last film Sicko grossed $24 million and Fahrenheit 9/11 grossed $119 million. They are the two of the highest grossing documentaries. Sicko could have earned even more but many downloaded the movie illegally.

Moore said it will cost him $3 million to make and release this movie online for free. Moore and his distributor, Brave New Films, have no plans to make a profit from this movie.

Moore will make this movie available on Blip.TV and will available at a higher resolution than what YouTube offers currently.
