Gustav, a tropical storm at present, may become an extremely dangerous hurricane next week as the storm enters Gulf of Mexico. Latest forecasts predict Gustav will grow into a Category 3 hurricane by Sunday.
Hurricane Gustav was downgraded to a tropical storm as it crossed the mountains of Haiti today. Gustav had entered the island nation as a Category-1 hurricane dumping heavy rain and causing landslides. It is expected that the storm may regain hurricane status by tonight as it enters the warm waters once again moving towards Cuba.
Weather experts fear Gustav could be the first major hurricane to hit Gulf coast since Katrina and Rita in 2005. Crude prices have already soared to touch $120 a barrel on Wednesday as more than 50 percent of Gulf oil production is under threat.

The National Hurricane Center forecasts
Gustav -- the first serious storm to threaten Louisiana since Katrina and Rita -- will grow into a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds by Sunday afternoon, when it is expected to hover about 300 miles south of the Mississippi River's mouth.
Joe Bastardi of AccuWeather.com said:
Gustav may become a destructive hurricane rivaling Rita and Katrina in effect on energy. Tracks of storms of this genre include the worst hits on Galveston and Gustav has a chance to join that list. There is nothing in Gustav's path that will hinder development. There is a strong probability that it will be a Category 3 storm by the time it enters the Gulf, and it has the potential to strengthen into a Category 4 or 5 storm over the Gulf
.
Meanwhile Governor of Lousiana Boby Jindal said the state is prepared for the storm and requested people to be ready for evacuation in case of an emergency. He said,
Be ready, this is a serious storm.
