Lately Joe Lieberman has been speculated to be a potential running mate for John McCain. Now in a classic Zell Miller move, the Connecticut Senator will receive a prime time speaking slot at the Republican convention.
The
Hartford Courant is reporting that Joe Lieberman will open the GOP convention in Minnesota on September 1st. The move is sure to ruffle the feathers of Democrats who already approach Lieberman with kid gloves about his political straddling because he holds their slim political majority in his hands.
Lieberman still caucuses with Senate Democrats but is a staunch supporter of John McCain's presidential bid. He often travels with the Arizona Senator never shy to whisper a correction in his ear. He is a longtime supporter of abortion rights, a stance that conservatives would certainly be at odds with if McCain were to choose him as a running mate. He has also been a strong supporter of the Iraq war in lieu of his support for Israel.
One has to wonder if the Senators speech will be reminiscent of the last Democratic Senator to cross party lines at a GOP convention. In 2004, former Senator Zell Miller, a Georgia Democrat, mocked the Democratic ticket as weak on defense during his
speech at the GOP's national convention at Madison Square Garden. He also
famously challenged MSNBC’s Chris Matthews to a duel.
Just eight years ago Lieberman was Al Gore’s choice for Vice-President. My times have changed rather quickly.
