The war in Afghanistan escalates with attacks over the last two days being the most fierce in years. The Taliban are back, stronger than ever since being overpowered by the US led invasion six years ago.
Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan is entering a siege mentality as the Taliban re-group and hit French troops with the deadliest ground attacks since the US and NATO led invasion began almost six years ago.

The latest action was part of two audacious attack on the largest US Base in Afghanistan located near the city of Khost. The well co-ordinated on Monday and Tuesday of this week where the Taliban who threw waves of suicide bombers at the US defenders.

The brazen actions of the Taliban and the co-ordination of specific weapons and tactics in the attacks gives rise to speculation that the Taliban see a window of opportunity.

The will of some of the countries fighting the Taliban is starting to wane. Combined with a new government in Pakistan and the resignation of President Musharraf on Monday, the Taliban are pushing their offensive.

Musharraf resigned before impeachment proceedings commenced against him. Seen as an ally of the West in spearheading the post 9/11 war on terror, it is not known what directions relations between Washington and Pakistan will take.

With the US alone now having lost over 500 soldiers in Afghanistan and a new US Administration on the horizon, the Taliban are taking the initiative.
